An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device used in cardiac arrest that automatically detects the life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient and is able to treat them through defibrillation. Defibrillation is the application of electrical therapy or a shock to the chest wall via electrode pads which stops the arrhythmia, in the hope that the heart can reestablish an effective pumping rhythm.
AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the general public to use without any formal training in how to use a defibrillator. Training in the use of
AEDs is taught in many first aid, first responder, and basic life support level CPR classes and does impove pad placement, quality of CPR before and between shocks and the critical element of the “time to first shock”
Why is an AED needed?
Automated external defibrillators or defibs have the techology to aut
omatically assess whether someone who is having an apparent heart attack or suffers a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) where the heart has stopped pumping effectively, is a candidate for a shock. It then administers
one if needed. Without effective CPR and defibrillation, an SCA patient’s survival rate decreases by 10% every minute.
